Jemima’s Restaurant

The ladle of the logo says it all – the Malherbes of Jemima’s live to share the lure of Jemima, a guardian angel of love, good taste and the finest cuisine who graciously chose to lend her name to this piece of paradise. The ladle serves. The ladle shares. Delicious dishes. An earthy warmth. Complete satisfaction. All abundantly dished up.

Everything Pierre and Debbie does confirm the witty saying of Oudtshoorn’s most famous son, writer and pioneer of the Afrikaans language, CJ Langenhoven, “goed genoeg was nog nooit goed genoeg nie” (good enough is never good enough). Their extended family table is the perfect place to be for all who wish to share in rare traditional rural hospitality.

The rustic feel-good food is prepared with ingredients that are in season – from the yard garden and from local produce markets. Dishes of locally farmed Ostrich and Karoo lamb, and fish from the neighbouring South Cape Coast are washed down with wines selected to heighten the flavoursome enjoyment.

Crisp paprika potato skins with quince chilli jam and sour cream. Muscadel jus and oven-baked garlic compliment earthy deboned leg of Karoo lamb, or cutlets. Ostrich, venison and beef are served in polite portions – or robust farmhouse portions! Be sure to order a side dish of pumpkin fritters.

“Life”, the angel was once heard to murmur, “is uncertain… eat desert.” Jemima’s crème brûlée will have you return from the ends of the world to indulge once more and yet again.

In a town known as a cultural gathering place with endless views and splendid creations by both Divine and human hand, you may wish to return only to dine with the angel.

Jemima’s. The angel leaves you with a lasting memory of old fashioned goodness.
