Seven aspiring golfers, six lads and a lady, couldn’t be smiling any broader when they received their own sets of golf clubs and goody bags after being selected to participate in the “Golf Clubs for the Underprivileged” charity event. This initiative is a spin off of the recent Ultimate Golf Road Trip, hosted by Golf in the Garden Route in February 2012.

During this marathon golfing event, 64 golfers played nine of the Garden Route’s most beautiful courses in 7 days.  Now only in its third year this event is already planning for no less than a 100 golfers to participate in 2013.

“With the growing success of the Ultimate Golfing Road trip since 2010, we really felt that we wanted to give something back to the Community” says Mariska Nortje from Golf in the Garden Route and organiser of the event.

“In conjunction with the SAGDB (South African Golf Development Board), these seven aspiring golfers were selected.  We want to make this an annual charity event.”

Johan Erasmus, manager of SAGDB in the Southern Cape, mentioned that the selection was made from three groups of young golfers currently involved in a golf development program.

Marco Olivier from the Swing Lab will be responsible for the coaching offered as part of the Charity initiative and out going personality insured that his new student immediately felt at home, responding with lots of giggles to his teasing comments.

On being asked how they feel about this great opportunity, the young golfers stroked their new clubs with quiet admiration.
Most of them just shook their heads and said that they still couldn’t believe it.  Ask them who’s going to be the champ and the rose amongst the thorns, Rone Rhoode who has been playing golf for seven years, displays that confident smile that says it all.

On behalf of Golf in the Garden Route, Mariska extended a word of thanks to everyone who contributed to make this charity event a reality:
